Join Healthy World Cafe for First Friday!

Take a break from the cold and warm up with Healthy World Cafe for First Friday!

(Photo courtesy of Flickr user Kona Gallagher)
Stop in and enjoy a bowl of beef and corn chowder with coleslaw as we "pop up" at Heidelberg UCC. We'll be serving our fresh-made, locally-sourced soup from 6 p.m. until sold out during Heidelberg's HeidelBean Coffee House, held at 47 W. Philadelphia St. across from Central Market.

Come in for Heidelberg's open mike set and stick around for a cup of locally sourced soup. Of course, our menu is always based on what's available from our farmer friends, so stay tuned for updates!
At Healthy World Cafe, we always feature our "eat what you want, pay how you can" philosophy. The ability to pay should never be a barrier to accessing delicious, unprocessed, healthy food.

If you'd like to volunteer to prep or serve for our First Friday "pop-up," we'd love the help! Volunteers can sign up through VolunteerSpot.

Because of the holidays, we will NOT be open for lunch in December. But did you know? You can donate to Healthy World Cafe at any time online. You can also make a tax deductible donation by check -- just write "Healthy World Cafe fund" in the memo line, and mail your contribution to:

Philanthropic Endeavors Foundation Inc.
2251 Friesian Road, York, PA 17406

You will receive a tax receipt by return mail.

Thank you for your support!

Bringing things together...changes and updates to upcoming events

Sometimes things come together in great ways!

As many of you know, HWC has partnered with Horn Farm and Buy Fresh, Buy Local to hold an innovative farm to table dinner (Farm-To-City) on Beaver Street on October 6, 2013. Rather than put a strain on all of our hardworking volunteers, farmers and donors, we are combining our Market-to-Table fundraiser with the new Farm-To-City event to dedicate all of our resources to this fabulous fall feast. With these great partners, this event promises to be one that the City of York will be remembering for years to come.

For those of you who have already bought tickets to the original event, don't worry: your tickets are transferable (or refundable if you are unable to join us on October 6).

If you are interested in volunteering for event planning, silent auction planning, or working in the kitchen during the event, or if you have any questions, please contact us at: healthyworldcafe@gmail.com.

Healthy World Cafe volunteer updates

As spring begins to peek out here and there (who else is loving this sunshine?!), Healthy World Cafe has a couple of busy months coming up. With that in mind, we wanted to share some of our upcoming volunteer opportunities -- and announce a change to our monthly lunches:

Pea hummus! On the menu for next week.
Healthy World Cafe always wants to respect our volunteers' time -- we love that you've chosen to help out with our mission to provide a locally sourced, healthy meal for anyone, regardless of ability to pay! And, of course, we want you to return and volunteer again.

So, beginning with March, we'll be splitting the Wednesday lunch into two volunteer shifts: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and noon to 3 p.m.

After all, being on your feet for six hours is a long day. With shifts, we aim to give volunteers time for a break to enjoy the food we know you've worked so hard on, and at the same time get an influx of fresh energy to close out the day and help with clean up.

If you can't volunteer for an exact shift, hey, we understand that, too! We love that you're still eager to help out when you can. We would just ask that, after signing up through VolunteerSpot, that you'd send a quick email to sarah.e.chain(at)gmail(dot)com and let us know when to expect you. That makes it easier for us to plan out volunteer duties.

Coming up this week is a private, catered event at Central Market York. We'll have food prep hours Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and then meet up around 3 p.m. Thursday to set up and serve at the event. Here are the details:

-- 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 -- Food prep for a private catered event. Meet at First Moravian Church (FMC), 39 N. Duke St., York.
-- 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, March 13 -- Food prep for a private catered event. Meet at YorKitchen, Central Market York.
-- 3 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14 -- Food prep and serving for a private catered event in Central Market York. Meet at YorKitchen. This day will be split into two shifts: 3 to 7 p.m., and 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. If you can't work a specific shift (say, you can be there 5 to 9, but not as early as 3), please email sarah.e.chain(at)gmail(dot)com and let us know when to expect you!

Curious about our other upcoming events -- our March lunch, Go Green in the City, and more? Check out our page of upcoming dates, and sign up through VolunteerSpot.

Thanks again for all you do!

Join Healthy World Cafe for lunch Feb. 27

Drum roll, please... Healthy World Cafe will be open for lunch Feb. 27!

Join us from 11:30 a.m.  to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 at First Moravian Church, 39 N. Duke St., in downtown York. We'll be featuring locally grown produce in soups, salads and warm entrees -- check back soon for a full menu!

At Healthy World Cafe, we always feature our "eat what you want, pay how you can" philosophy.  The ability to pay should never be a barrier to accessing delicious, unprocessed, healthy food.  Take out orders are available by emailing your selections (by 10 a.m. Feb. 27) to healthyworldcafe(at)gmail(dot)com.

To receive periodic updates from Healthy World Cafe, send your email address to us at the email address listed above.  If you'd like to volunteer with Healthy World Cafe for food preparations 6:30 to 9 p.m. Feb. 25 and Feb. 26 or for prep and serving 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 28, click on the box above and to the right, "Volunteer Spot."

We split our food prep into two nights -- Monday and Tuesday -- to move away from the long hours volunteers were spending in the kitchen on Tuesday night. So whether you're available for Monday, Tuesday, or both, please join us!

We'll also have our FABULOUS Healthy World Cafe T-shirts for sale at lunch -- the same ones our volunteers wear. Make a statement around town with your new HWC gear!

Here are some other upcoming dates to keep in mind as well:
  • 6:30 to 9 p.m. March 12 and March 13, First Moravian. Prep for a private catered event.
  • 5 to 10:30 p.m. March 14, Central Market's YorKitchen. Prep and serving for a private catered event.
  • 6:30 to 9 p.m. April 18 and April 19, First Moravian. Prep for Go Green in the City.
  • 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 20, Central Market's YorKitchen / Beaver Street. Prep and serving for Go Green in the City.
Celebrate all that is local and delicious -- and with a great community of supporters! Hope to see you soon.

Advisory Group Meeting Jan. 7th

Happy 2013!  Is your new year's resolution to get more involved in your community?  If so, join us at HWC's next Advisory Group Meeting on Monday, January 7, 6:30 p.m., at Friends Meeting House, 135 W. Philadelphia St. in York.

Great volunteers staffing the HWC kitchen
The Advisory Group is a group of interested volunteers and individuals who advise and give feedback to the Guiding Committee of HWC.  These members are crucial to the success of the Healthy World Cafe.  Many of our Advisory Group members are also volunteers at our monthly luncheons at the First Moravian Church.

Networking, fellowship and that feeling you get when helping others are some of the benefits of being involved in the Advisory Group.

Advisory Group meetings are held the first Monday of each month, always at 6:30 and always at the Friends Meeting House.  Mark your calendars!  You can always check our calendar of events at the bottom of our webpage.

Join us on Monday, January 7, and help us grow HWC in 2013!  We've got great news to share!
